Biased Questions, Intonation and Discourse

چکیده
Semanticists have demonstrated repeatedly over the past twenty years that intonation often conveys information important for determining the content of a discourse. For example, intonation is important for marking focus in English, which in turn is important for interpreting sentences with focus sensitive adverbs like even and only (Beaver and Clark 2003). Intonation is also important in marking the discourse function of utterances in discourse and dialogue. For example, it is an essential clue in determining whether or not an assertion counts as a felicitous answer to a question given in the prior discourse context. The canonical way of presenting an answer to a question such as (1a) is to place the nuclear pitch accent on the constituent that replaces the wh-particle, as in (1b) (Kadmon 2001). Alternative realizations of the same sentence are anomalous, as shown in (1c).

Prosodic Cues for Backchannels and Short Questions: Really?
Short questions can be ambiguous even after considering their preceding contexts. Hence, prosody may be useful for disambiguating different types of questions and their uses. For example, question bias has been linked to the presence of certain pitch accents. This paper presents a corpus study of very short questions and the contribution of prosodic cues to discourse disambiguation. This study ...
متن کاملThe encoding of epistemic operations in two Romance languages: intonation and pragmatic markers
For years linguists have noted that intonation patterns and sentence-final discourse particles encode similar meanings across languages (e.g., [23], [21]). Yet the division of labor between the two kinds of systems—and in particular whether there exists a compensatory distribution between them— remains to be clarified. In this article, we focus on two languages within the Romance group (Catalan...
متن کاملIntonation of Left Dislocated Topics in Modern Greek
We present in this paper the results of a production experiment testing the effects of the discourse activation state on the intonation of left-dislocated topics in Modern Greek. The activation states of the topics (active, inactive and semi-active) were examined in three different sentence types, namely declaratives, WH-questions and yes-no questions. Results show that the tunes are not affect...
متن کاملThe Discourse Function of Final Rises in French Dialogues
In this paper, we report the results of an empirical study which aims at describing the discourse meaning of rises at right edge intonation boundaries in French dialogues. According to most French speakers, it is possible to turn an assertion into a question in French solely by pronouncing it with a rising intonation. While existing empirical studies [8, 7] confirm that there is some correlatio...
متن کاملTeaching intonation in discourse using speech visualization technology
Intonation, long thought to be a key to effectiveness in spoken language, is more and more commonly addressed in English language teaching through the use of speech visualization technology. While the use of visualization technology is a crucial advance in the teaching of intonation, such teaching can be further enhanced by connecting technology to an understanding of how intonation functions i...
